The billionaire who publicly champions “America First” policies is suddenly concerned about — wait for it — tariffs hurting his bottom line.
This is the same Elon Musk who strutted into Washington as Trump’s efficiency czar, wielding his axe to slash government spending and federal jobs with gleeful abandon. Now, when those same policies threaten Tesla’s profit margins, the tune changes dramatically.
The March 11 letter to Trade Representative Jamison Greer reads like a masterclass in corporate double-speak. Tesla, concerned about “downstream impacts” and “retaliatory tariffs,” is essentially saying: “These economic nationalist policies are great until they affect me personally.”
