I usually take the weekend off from writing. I like to “recharge” for two days, but not today. Last June my name joined the list of many proud men and women who work in healthcare to be printed in the New England Journal of Medicine. I was and remain very proud of this and the work I did with the HEALing Communities Study and the efforts made by so many to have our work published.
To learn that the man who once stared directly at an eclipse is now determined to blind America to science itself, made me pick up my iPad and start to write. The attack on this publication is outrageous.
Donald Trump, the carnival barker-in-chief with his cotton candy coiffure, has assembled a medical brain trust that makes the Addams Family look like Johns Hopkins. It's a confederacy of dunces in lab coats, where credentials are measured not in peer-reviewed papers but in prime-time ratings and conspiracy theory retweets.
His White House now resembles a medical medieval court where the bloodletters have returned to power. Trump, who considers a diet of hamburgers and well-done steak slathered in ketchup to be the pinnacle of nutrition, has positioned himself as America's diagnostician-in-chief.
The former president who suggested Americans might inject bleach to fight COVID has declared war on actual medical experts, preferring instead the counsel of those who peddle miracle cures with the zealotry of late-night infomercial hosts.
