When I set out to write this piece, my thoughts inevitably turned to Dr. Christine Duggleby, the woman whose influence carved permanent grooves in my mind. She was my human genetics professor—brilliant by every measure and universally recognized as such. Before writing about her, I searched online, thinking I should ask permission (though I was confident she'd approve, given the many references she'd written for me). That's when I discovered she had died.

Dr. Duggleby was the one who taught me to see science within the larger context of political forces that could threaten its integrity. Her lectures were extraordinary. Through her teaching on eugenics in the late 1980s, she showed me how policy could become science's adversary. She was among the few who championed my work on AIDS and HIV research. And she believed in me, telling me I would make a wonderful physician. And when I said I didn't want to be a doctor, she was profoundly supportive when few were.
