Thanksgiving, Nonetheless
Slowing down for the holiday—but not stopping
The holiday arrives in less than twenty-four hours. A break from cataloging the various fires—political, literal, moral—would be welcome, but it isn’t coming. I will, however, be slowing down: finishing my series on the GOP presidents for paying subscribers, and turning my attention to a new investigation into the murder of Dan Markel, the Florida State law professor gunned down in his own driveway, allegedly at the direction of his ex-wife’s family. The Adelsons. I have an odd personal connection to this story, which I’ll explain in time.
I’m also working on something different—a personal essay called “Physeter Macrocephalus” that I hope to have ready in December.
Gratitude. It’s the assignment this week, isn’t it? And I’m finding it difficult. I watch what’s unfolding at home and across the world, knowing my country’s hands are in so much of it—the suffering we’re exporting alongside the suffering we’re cultivating here. Arctic drilling.
