There are moments in today’s American political dramas when the mask slips so completely that even the most jaded observer must pause in horrified fascination. Such was the spectacle of Texas Governor Greg Abbott, standing amid the wreckage of his state's latest preventable disaster, informing grieving families that seeking accountability for the deaths of over 100 people—including 27 children at a Christian summer camp—was "the word choice of losers."
Abbott's performance was pure political pornography: a grotesque display of power uncoupled from responsibility.
