As a young medical student in NYC in 1980, I had the privilege of hearing Dr. Fauci speak about his research and initial scientific insights into AIDS and the suspected cause HIV just as the epidemic of AIDS filled the city hospitals. Although I was not interested in infectious disease, I was in awe and admiration of this clearly brilliant physician-scientist and his presentation and could understand why so many of the medical residents and fellow students wished to join him and his lab at the NIH. Dr. Fauci's seminal work was instrumental in solving the AIDS crisis and his influence led to so many young physician-scientists to extend that work such that HIV is now a chronic managed illness.
A good part of quality medicine is the understanding that as physicians we must manage constant uncertainty regarding how diseases affect a person and then how effective our prescribed treatments can be. Few disease processes are managed by simple and straightforward cures and the COVID-19 pandemic is emblematic, and that is before the bloody politicians got involved. Dr. Fauci, rather than claiming the retirement he earned, chose to again try to solve this puzzle and the nation owes him gratitude rather than vindictive taunts. His diary reflects the inner personal thoughts of a great clinician facing enormous uncertainty and unfamiliarity with celebrity fame rather than a devious doctor.
Rand Paul, an ophthalmologist of little clinical relevance, should recall some of his clinical training and medical reasoning and defer to the infectious disease expertise of Dr. Fauci when it comes to the virology of SARS-COVID. However, Paul has chosen high political theater to denigrate one of this country's great physician-scientists. Rather than seeking clinical truth, Rand Paul seeks to obfuscate the facts.
To paraphrase an old medical adage: those who can, do; those who can't, teach; those who can't teach; go into politics.
