There are so many things in this world that can hurt you. Not a hangnail or stubbing your toe on a doorjamb; I’m talking about the kind of pain you carry with you on the inside. At least with a cast you get the trifecta of injury: an objective sign that something real happened, the empathy of those who also broke a limb, and guarantee that people will acknowledge that something did happen.
The internal pain we carry from rejection, apathy, or being ignored often plays out in a lonely private place (our heads and hearts) where the only company is shame and self-pity.
